The Family Creed

Pastor Joe Ducharme teaches that as God’s children, we’re called to live out our faith by working out what He’s worked in, rejecting complaining, shining His light in a dark world, holding tightly to the gospel, and joyfully pouring out our lives in sacrificial love

Sermon Notes

Philippians 2:12-30

Paul calls believers to work out their salvation with reverent awe, not to work for salvation. Justification is God’s gift. Sanctification is our Spirit-empowered effort. Our responsibility in verse 12 rests on God’s activity in verse 13. He works in us to will and to do His good pleasure, so grace fuels effort rather than removing it.

Do All Things Without Complaining or Arguing (Philippians 2:14)
“Do all things” confronts everyday murmuring and divisive disputing. Grumbling questions God’s goodness and providence. Scripture warns through Israel’s wilderness complaints, while the antidote is gratitude, worship, and trust in God’s character in every season.

Shine as Lights in a Crooked Generation (Philippians 2:15)
As God’s children we shine in a dark and twisted culture. Light is most visible against darkness, and our brightness grows as we stay near the Source, Jesus the Light of the world. This is not a holy huddle but a sent identity: faithful presence, integrity, compassion, and truth in everyday places.

Hold Fast and Hold Forth the Word of Life (Philippians 2:16)
Believers cling to the gospel personally and also hold it forth publicly. The word of life is both our daily anchor and our message to a world that needs Christ. Paul longs to rejoice that his labor among them was not in vain.

Joyfully Pour Out Your Life (Philippians 2:17 to 18)
Paul pictures his life as a drink offering poured on the Philippians’ sacrificial service. New-covenant worship looks like costly love for God and others. Such mutual sacrifice produces shared joy.

Conclusion and Application:
Pastor Joe calls us to embrace God’s family creed. Cooperate with grace in sanctification, refuse grumbling, live as visible light, grip the gospel tightly while offering it freely, and choose joyful, costly service. In a dark world this family likeness magnifies Christ.

Practical Takeaway:

  • Work out what God has worked in through daily obedience and dependence on Him.

  • Replace grumbling with gratitude, trust, and peacemaking.

  • Stay close to Jesus so you shine where it is darkest.

  • Hold fast and hold forth the gospel in word and deed.

  • Pour out your life in joyful service to God and to others.

Intro to the Seven Churches of Revelation

Jesus commended the church in Ephesus for their hard work, perseverance, biblical discernment, and refusal to tolerate false teaching. He rebuked them for leaving their first love, their devotion and affection for Him. A church can be busy serving, doctrinally sound, and morally faithful while still drifting from a close, joyful relationship with Christ. Jesus …
