Sermon Notes

Philippians 3:1–11
Joy, Righteousness, and the Surpassing Worth of Knowing Christ

Rejoice as a Safeguard for Your Soul (Philippians 3:1)

Paul commands believers to rejoice in the Lord, not because life is easy, but because joy rooted in Christ protects the heart from bitterness, discouragement, and drift. Joy is an act of obedience that anchors believers when circumstances shake.

Beware of Legalism That Steals Joy (Philippians 3:2–3)

Paul warns against false teachers who added works to the gospel. He flips their insults back on them, calling them “dogs,” “evil workers,” and the “mutilation.” True believers are identified not by ritual but by worshiping in the Spirit, boasting in Christ, and refusing to put confidence in the flesh.

Reject Confidence in Your Religious Credentials (Philippians 3:4–6)

Paul lists his impressive Jewish pedigree to show that if human effort could save, he would qualify. Yet even the best religious performance cannot make someone right with God. The most moral, disciplined, or religious people still fall short and need grace.

Count All Things Loss Compared to Knowing Christ (Philippians 3:7–8)

Everything Paul once valued—heritage, achievement, reputation—became worthless compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus. He calls it rubbish, a strong word meaning filth, because nothing can compare to the treasure of a true relationship with Christ.

Receive the Righteousness That Comes by Faith (Philippians 3:9)

Paul explains that salvation is not earned by keeping rules but received through faith. God gives believers the righteousness of Christ, forgiving their debt and crediting them with Christ’s perfect record. This is the heart of the gospel: Jesus plus nothing.

Pursue Christ in His Resurrection Power and His Sufferings (Philippians 3:10–11)

Knowing Christ includes both resurrection power and fellowship in suffering. Believers experience new life in the Spirit while learning to die to the old self. This daily transformation prepares them for the final resurrection and eternal life with Christ.

Practical Takeaways

Let joy in Christ anchor and protect your heart.

Reject legalism by placing all your confidence in Christ, not your performance.

Treasure Christ above accomplishments, identity, or reputation.

Rest in the righteousness God gives through faith, not personal effort.

Follow Christ through both His power and His sufferings as you grow into His likeness.

Intro to the Seven Churches of Revelation

Jesus commended the church in Ephesus for their hard work, perseverance, biblical discernment, and refusal to tolerate false teaching. He rebuked them for leaving their first love, their devotion and affection for Him. A church can be busy serving, doctrinally sound, and morally faithful while still drifting from a close, joyful relationship with Christ. Jesus …
