Freedom

Jesus teaches that true freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want, but being set free from the bondage of sin through knowing and following Him, who is the Truth.

Sermon Notes

John 8:31-36

Jesus teaches that true freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want, but being set free from the bondage of sin through knowing and following Him, who is the Truth. Through His death and resurrection, Christ frees believers from sin’s penalty, offering them a new identity as sons and daughters of God who live by grace rather than striving to earn His favor.

Practical Takeaways:

  • Abide in God’s Word daily. Jesus said that knowing and remaining in His truth is what leads to genuine freedom, so make Scripture the foundation for your beliefs and decisions rather than the changing values of culture.
  • Live in the freedom Christ has already purchased. Don’t return to the bondage of sin, fear, guilt, or trying to earn God’s acceptance through your own efforts; rest in His grace and walk in obedience because you are already accepted in Christ.
  • Reflect the freedom of the Gospel to others. Since Jesus has forgiven and liberated you, extend that same grace by forgiving others, sharing the Gospel boldly, and pointing people to the only true source of lasting freedom Jesus Christ.
