Sermon Notes

Jonah 1:1-3

This passage introduces the story of Jonah and highlights its central theme: God’s mercy and His mission to reach all people.

In Jonah 1, God commands Jonah to go to Nineveh, a great and wicked enemy city, and call its people to repentance. Instead of obeying, Jonah runs in the opposite direction, revealing a common human tendency to resist God’s will.

Key Takeaways:

  • God’s character: He is merciful and desires to save even the most sinful people.
  • Jonah’s struggle: He resists God due to fear, comfort, and ultimately because he doesn’t want his enemies to receive mercy.
  • Human tendency: Like Jonah, people often ignore God’s commands, justify disobedience, and “run away.”
  • Consequences of disobedience: Running from God leads to spiritual decline (“down, down, down”), but God still pursues and doesn’t give up on people.
  • Main theme: The book is less about the fish and more about God’s compassionate heart for all nations and His desire to change both the world and His people.

Contender’s Gym Part 1

Faith is not an issue of the mind, it is an issue of the heart(Psalm 95, Hebrews 3). Scripture warns believers not to harden their hearts, to avoid relying on past spiritual victories, and to faithfully proclaim the gospel in love, as defined by God rather than by culture.
