The Lord is My Shepherd

Pastor Joe DuCharme teaches from Psalm 23 to show that the Lord is a shepherd who leads, protects, restores, and welcomes His people, offering peace in life’s green pastures and comfort in its darkest valleys.

Sermon Notes

Psalm 23

A Personal Shepherd Who Provides

Psalm 23 shows David looking back on his life and calling Yahweh “my shepherd,” not a distant God but a personal caretaker. Like helpless sheep, we cannot thrive without His leadership, and His commands are not burdens but pathways to green pastures, still waters, and real soul-rest.

Guided in Righteous Paths and Dark Valleys

God leads His people in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake, giving peace that the world’s success and comfort cannot match. When life moves into the valley of the shadow of death, the language shifts from “He” to “You,” showing how suffering makes God’s presence more personal, as His rod protects and His staff guides even in the darkest moments.

From Pasture to Banquet and the Way In

The image moves from fields to a feast as God prepares a table in the presence of enemies, anoints our heads, and fills our cups to overflowing with mercy and goodness. Pastor Joe reminds us that all of this security and hope comes only through the cross of Psalm 22, where Jesus, the Good Shepherd, became the sacrificial Lamb so that those who trust Him can say, “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Practical Takeaways

  • Treat God not as distant, but as your personal shepherd who knows and meets your true needs.

  • Follow His leading in righteousness, trusting that real peace is found in His will, not in your own plans.

  • Cling to His presence in dark valleys, believing that He is uniquely near in suffering.

  • Rest in the promise that goodness and mercy are following you because of Christ, not your performance.

  • Come through the cross to know the Shepherd and live with confidence in eternal life with Him.

The road to glory runs through death

In John 12, the arrival of the Greeks signals that Jesus’ mission is extending to all nations and that the time has come for His death and glorification. Jesus teaches that, like a seed that must die to produce fruit, His sacrifice on the cross will bring salvation and spiritual life to all who call …
