The Hound of Heaven

No one can outrun God. In the story of Jonah, the main focus isn’t the fish, but God’s relentless pursuit of people, both those far from Him and those already called by Him.

Sermon Notes

Jonah 1:4-16

Jonah disobeys God’s command to go to Nineveh and instead runs away, leading to a violent storm at sea. While pagan sailors desperately pray, Jonah sleeps, showing how sin leads to spiritual decline, affects others, and brings consequences. God sends the storm not to destroy Jonah, but to discipline and redirect him.

The sailors eventually realize Jonah is the cause, and after throwing him into the sea, the storm immediately calms. This act foreshadows Jesus, who brings ultimate peace by taking on judgment Himself. The sailors respond with reverence and faith, showing that God’s grace extends even to outsiders.

Key Takeaways:

  • God actively pursues people with mercy and grace.
  • God’s discipline is an act of love
  • True peace comes from turning to Him rather than running away.

Intro to the Seven Churches of Revelation

He rebuked them for leaving their first love, their devotion and affection for Him. A church can be busy serving, doctrinally sound, and morally faithful while still drifting from a close, joyful relationship with Christ. Jesus …
