The King Among Us

Pastor Mike Tonks teaches that true worship is never casual, it’s a joyful, grateful response to what Jesus has done, and it shows up as costly, humble, wholehearted devotion that puts Christ above comfort, money, and appearances.

Sermon Notes

John 12:1–8

The King Is Among Us

Celebratory Worship (John 12:1–2)
A dinner is held to honor Jesus and celebrate his work, demonstrating worship that flows naturally from gratitude and joy for what Christ has done.

Extravagant Worship (John 12:3)
Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume(worth nearly a year’s wages). Her worship is costly, humble, and wholehearted, she offered her best to Christ without restraint.

False Worship (John 12:4–6)
Judas values money over Jesus, disguising greed as spiritual concern. His response reveals the sharp contrast between outward religion and a heart truly devoted to Christ.

True Worship (John 12:7–8)
Jesus affirms Mary’s act, showing that while care for the poor matters, honoring Christ takes priority. True worship recognizes the worth of Jesus above all else.

Jesus the Promised King and Sacrificial Lamb
Set against the backdrop of Passover and Israel’s longing for a king, Jesus is revealed as the long-awaited King and the Lamb of God. Unlike earthly rulers, he does not abandon his people but gives his life for them-calling his followers to lives marked by worship, praise, and thanksgiving.

Practical Takeaways

  • Celebrate what Jesus has done with joy and gratitude.
  • Offer Christ your best, not leftovers, in worship.
  • True worship flows from a transformed heart.
