In The Belly Of The Beast

No one can outrun God. In the story of Jonah, the main focus isn’t the fish, but God’s relentless pursuit of people, both those far from Him and those already called by Him.

Slide with the title “In the Belly of the Beast” and scripture reference “Jonah 1:17–2:10.” A man wearing a headset microphone stands at a wooden lectern with an open Bible, speaking and gesturing, with a blurred blue ocean-like background. The text “Calvary Chapel The Rock” and a church logo appear at the bottom.

Sermon Notes

Jonah 1:17-2:10

  • God’s Mercy extends to all!
  • God doesn’t give up on us, even when we run from Him.
  • Difficult or painful seasons can be the very place where we wake up spiritually.
  • Jonah’s prayer shows that turning back to God starts with honesty and humility.
  • He remembers God’s Word, showing that truth anchors us in hard moments.
  • Idols (comfort, pride, control, etc.) pull us away from God and block us from experiencing His mercy.
  • The story ultimately points to Jesus, the “greater Jonah,” who went through death and resurrection to bring salvation.

Practical takeaway:
When you find yourself in a “belly of the beast” moment – stress, failure, confusion, or pain – don’t wait to fix everything first. Instead, turn to God right there. Be honest about where you are, let go of whatever you’re clinging to, and start reconnecting through prayer and Scripture. The turning point often begins not when circumstances change, but when your direction does.
