Consider Your Ways

In this sermon on Haggai 1, Joe DuCharme challenges believers to “consider their ways” by examining how discouragement can shift priorities away from God, reminding us that true fulfillment and renewed strength come when we put Him first and walk in obedience, trusting His promised presence.

Sermon Notes

Haggai 1:1-15

Consider Your Ways: Putting God First

After returning from exile, God’s people began rebuilding the temple with enthusiasm, but opposition and delay led to discouragement, apathy, and misplaced priorities. Through the prophet Haggai, God calls His people to evaluate their lives, realign their priorities, and put Him first, promising His presence when they walk in obedience.

Displaced priorities from discouragement (Haggai 1:1–4):
Though the people had time to build and improve their own homes, they claimed it was “not the right time” to rebuild God’s house. Discouragement led them to shift their focus from God’s work to personal comfort.

A call to self-examination (Haggai 1:5–11):
God urges the people to “consider your ways.” Their lack of fulfillment, fruitlessness, and dissatisfaction revealed that self-focused priorities could not bring lasting contentment. Obedience to God, not personal gain, is the path to true satisfaction.

An obedient response that invites God’s presence (Haggai 1:12–15):
When the leaders and people obeyed God’s word, He stirred their hearts and promised, “I am with you.” As they resumed the work, God’s presence empowered and encouraged them to move forward despite opposition.

Practical Takeaway
When discouragement shifts our priorities, God graciously calls us to examine our lives and put Him first. True fulfillment comes from obedience, trusting that God’s presence and power accompany those who align their priorities with His will.

No one can outrun God. In the story of Jonah, the main focus isn’t the fish, but God’s relentless pursuit of people, both those far from Him and those already called by Him.

The Resurrection and the Road

The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of true hope, proving that death is defeated and new life is available to all who believe. As He met the disciples on the road, Jesus still meets us in our confusion, reveals Himself through Scripture, and invites us into a life-changing relationship with Him.

Pilate, the crowd, and Barabbas each face a dilemma that ultimately points to one central question: who is Jesus to you? The story reveals that Jesus willingly took the punishment we deserve so that we could be set free through faith.

Bended Knees and Clean Hearts

This passage shows that entering God’s kingdom requires childlike faith: humble dependence on Him rather than trust in our own efforts, possessions, or righteousness. It calls us to surrender anything that competes with Jesus.
