Emmanuel, God With Us

Pastor Joe DuCharme teaches us that Immanuel means God stepped into our broken world through the virgin birth to save sinners, dwell with His people, and call us to trust and obey Him even when the path is hard.

Sermon Notes

Matthew 1:18–25

Immanuel: God With Us

The Virgin Birth and Our Salvation (Matthew 1:18, 20, 23, 25)
Everyone believes in a virgin birth, the question is which one do you believe in.

Joseph’s Character and Compassion (Matthew 1:19)
Joseph responded to Mary’s pregnancy with mercy and integrity. His character was stronger than his emotions. He chose compassion over public shame, demonstrating that mercy triumphs over judgment.

The Mission of Jesus (Matthew 1:21)
Jesus’ name means “God saves.” Christmas is a rescue mission. Humanity’s greatest need is not comfort but salvation from sin. Jesus came to save sinners, and no one is beyond His saving power.

Emmanuel: God With Us (Matthew 1:22–23)
Jesus fulfills prophecy as Emmanuel, “God with us.” God’s desire has always been to dwell with His people. Through Christ, separation that is caused by sin is restored, bringing hope, peace, and eternal life.

Joseph’s Obedient Faith (Matthew 1:24–25)
Joseph immediately obeyed God’s command. His obedience demonstrates faithful action even when circumstances are difficult or unclear.

Practical Takeaways

  • Trust God’s plan even when it disrupts your expectations.
  • Let character guide your actions rather than emotions.
  • Obey God despite fear or uncertainty.
  • Remember Emmanuel-God is with you in every season.
  • Christmas is a rescue mission: Jesus came to save sinners. He came to save you.
